We Love Baking! <3

Cooking is a great and most importantly fun way of  engaging children in teamwork, practicing their math & measurement skills, and at the same time give them a chance to explore new foods and learn about healthy food habits. At Art Village Nursery we have cooking sessions once a week with the children. They get to make everything from scones to healthy yogurt ice-cream. As we pour, stir and mix the different ingredients, we explore their texture and taste as well talk as about each step of the process. The children get a chance to count, develop their understanding for measurement as well their interest for different foods.

Reggio Emilia

Above is a wise quote from the founder of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, Loris Malaguzzi.

At Art Village Nursery we follow the Reggio Emilia approach and believe that for full growth to take place within a child's development it is important to follow their needs and interests. The Reggio Emilia approach promotes the idea that children are capable of constructing their own learning. According to the Reggio Emilia philosophy the teacher should work as a learner alongside the children, as well as a mentor where they listen to the children, and guide them throughout their learning experience. The key is to allow learning to take place by using the children's' own curiosity and interests.
In Reggio Emilia much emphasis is also put on the environment. Spaces should be open with long and bright hallways, and material should be accessible for the children to encourage exploration, discovery and self-directed learning.

Recycling and Crafting

As many of you might know Sweden recycles 99% of its garbage. Basically, not much goes wasted, at the same time as it helps preserve our precious planet.

At Art Village Nursery we recycle all of our material and encourage parents to bring their waste to the nursery. We always try to make use of our waste by finding fun crafts and activities for our little ones to do as we teach them to care for the environment.

Here are some of the crafts our children have done using material that would have normally ended up in the garbage bin.

The children used toilet paper rolls making roses

..and a forest full of trees!

We used cups to make frogs =)

Help preserve our planet by making use of waste!

Here are some pictures of our facilities =)

Our classrooms are spacious and bright. Children spend long days at the nursery, it is therefore important that they have large classrooms to move around in freely. At Art Village Nursery we have a rotating system, meaning that different activities take place in different classrooms. The children get to take advantage of the nursery's entire space instead of just spending the whole day in one assigned classroom.

The Benefits of Music

Several research studies in early childhood development have demonstrated that music brings many more benefits for the children besides simple joy. Experts have repeatedly stated the benefits music has on a child’s cognitive development. According to a study from Northwestern University in order for children to fully receive the cognitive benefits from music they have to actively engage in it, and not just have it played to them. We at Art Village Nursery recognize the benefits of music and therefore include music education in our curriculum as one of four parallel profiles.

Here is a great Ted Talks speech by Anita Collins who shares with us some of the benefits children get from music education.
